Lauren Malone is a PhD student in the Department of Anthropology, with a focus in archaeology. Her research investigates the dynamic roles that animals have played in the lives of ancient hunter-gatherers beyond subsistence. Through methods rooted in zooarchaeology, photogrammetry 3D modeling, and biomolecular analysis, she explores how hunter-gatherers in East Africa and Southeastern North America utilized animal byproducts to (re)shape strategies in environmental adaptation, technological innovation, and social networking.

Malone is a laboratory member for the Department of Anthropology’s Zooarchaeology Laboratory and Laboratory for the Analysis of Early Food-Webs (LAEF). Outside of her department, she is a Graduate Student Affiliate for the Office of Public Scholarship and Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity & Equity (CRE2).
