Transduction Workshop: From Graphics to Poetry

Transduction is the conversion of ethnographic insights from one genre into another genre (Marcus 2017).

In this workshop, brought to you by the Department of Anthropology's Experiential Ethnography Studio (EES), participants will transduct ethnographic materials (transcriptions of interviews, ethnographic notes, videos, or audio recordings, etc.) into a different mode of expression (poem, graphic, reel) to explore how we can convey meaning differently. By moving insights across modes, we not only understand and apply concepts of genre, affordances, and form-meaning relations, but also evaluate the affordances of form; in other words, learn which medium is better suited for specific content and why (Spitulnik 2025).

While this workshop event is directed to students who have ethnographic materials, those who want to learn and experience with other materials are welcome to join as we will have some available during workshop.
