2021 Photography Contest

Graduate Student Winners!

First Place: Bea Addis
Justice and Care – COP26 Glasgow, UK
This was at COP26 at the climate justice march. I was struck by the surging crowd, all representing different causes, of so many different ages, nationality and races standing under this mural of mother and child, especially in the incredible glowy storm light. It made me think of the huge amount of love and togetherness and care that undergirded this March and the collective desire to nurture a new form of justice.

Second Place: Leslie A. Paige
St. Catherine’s Island, Georgia
Photo depicts a coastal sunset framed by a boat and dock. Taken on St. Catherine’s Island, Georgia in May 2021. Earlier this year I lived and worked on St. Catherine’s Island as a primate keeper.

Third Place: Bea Addis
Red Rebels – COP26 Glasgow, UK
This picture was taken during a research trip to COP26 this November (2021) at the Climate Justice March that saw more than 150 000 people gather on the middle Saturday of the 2-week conference. The picture foregrounds a group called the Red Rebels who are “an international performance artivist troupe dedicated to illuminating the global environmental crisis and supporting groups and organizations fighting to save humanity and all species from mass extinction.”-according to their website http://redrebelbrigade.com/.
Honorable Mention: Melissa Ritchey
Retro-tractor - Hjaltadalur, Iceland
On the working farm, university, and institute of Hólar, located in Hjaltadalur, Iceland, where groundbreaking research is conducted daily, this Model 6600 Ford tractor is favored over the newer, hi-tech AI models of the so-called digital agriculture. Built between 1975-1981, it is a prime example of the retro-tractor movement, where farmers buy, sell, and use old farm equipment as its more reliable and, importantly, repairable. The movement is entangled within Right to Repair laws and a push against corporate profit mongering.
