Excellence in Research

Kylen Gartland
for conducting comprehensive and stellar research in biological anthropology through Washington University in St. Louis and the St. Louis Zoo. Kylen has conducted independent research on gorillas at the zoo, screened video footage from Congo in the Anthropology department’s Digital Primate Behavior Laboratory, and conducted analysis on behavioral observations of baboons in Zambia. Kylen has both submitted results to a peer-review journal for her gorilla research and presented at several professional conferences.

Contributions to Anthropology

Victoria Albert  for conducting research in the areas of sociocultural anthropology including acting as Co-Editor in Chief of Simple Syrup, the food and culture magazine at Washington University in St. Louis. Her article on quinoa was published in the Journal of the Graduate Association for Food studies, a peer reviewed journal. 
 
Pujitha Anur for conducting research in the areas of biological anthropology. Under the guidance of Dr. EA Quinn, Puji exhibited model scholarship as she worked independently on a project involving child growth.  
Naomi Johnson for conducting research in the areas of biological anthropology. Naomi’s first research project with Dr. Erik Trinkaus was presented at the Undergraduate Student Research Symposium of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists in 2015, and she presented new research at the same conference in 2017. 
 
Joselyn Walsh for conducting research in the areas of sociocultural anthropology.  Joselyn presented her research at the Central States Anthropological Society Conference and the Dimensions of Political Ecology conference. Joselyn strives to bridge discussions with activists, farmers, and scholars in the field of environmental anthropology.
 
Lauren Woyczynski for conducting research in the areas of biological anthropology.  Lauren worked tirelessly in the Milk and Biomarkers wet laboratory on a multitude of projects. Dr. EA Quinn would like to recognize Lauren as an engaged and thoughtful member of the research group.
 

Service to Anthropology

Margaret Abbey for fostering communities of scholars who share the common goal of increasing the rate of underrepresented populations in academia. Her service is exceptional both at Washington University in St. Louis and as an ambassador of anthropology to Howard County, Maryland.
 
Isabel Freedman for assisting the Department of Anthropology in communicating opportunities offered through the department, particularly related to study abroad programs. Isabel reliably offered assistance to her peers and the department. 
 
Amir Hassan for assisting the Department of Anthropology in outreach efforts to new and potential majors in which he offered advice and guidance to students based on his own broad experiences. Amir always responded to the Department’s call for assistance and on multiple occasions acted as an enthusiastic and energetic ambassador for the Department.
 
Stephanie Navarro for being a role model of advocacy and involvement in the community. Stephanie has been a volunteer with numerous programs both in St. Louis and Kansas City to tutor and mentor latinx youth and has devoted her research to the advancement of Latino health. 
 
Sanjivini Suresh for international service in Sri Lanka. Sanji re-established English and math learning programs for children orphaned by the Sri Lanka’s recent civil war, and mobilized the existing volunteer base to identify and combat deficiencies in the girls’ knowledge of basic math as resource coordinator at Grace Care Center.
